Kent Beachcombing Guide - Reculver East Towards Birchington

Reculver is a great place to go for a bit of beach combing, or indeed some beach photography, as there are many interesting and battered groynes and sea defenses to snap.

The Reculver towers, which sit at the top of the clay cliffs are another great subject to photograph, and a good place to sit down for a packed lunch. As you head east the cliffs recede and there is a small coastal path and sea wall surrounded by countryside.

People are friendly but not overly talkative. There are lots of dog walkers and cyclists on the coastal path, and in the summer a lot of holiday makers from the caravan park.

Type of Beach: The beach is shingle at high tide, with patches of sand, and a muddy rocky shore at low tide. There are sea defenses made from boulders, and groynes on the beach. These sea defenses are great places to look for interesting bits, from shells to driftwood, to fossils. As these are trapped and seem to stay relatively intact in these areas.

The rockpools at low tide are a good hunting ground for relics, fossils, and other bits and pieces that have been preserved in the clay, and dragged up by the tide.

Is Reculver Beach Good For Kids? It can be a bit muddy, but it depends on what the kids are into. I used to hate swimming at Reculver, but really loved beach combing there.

Amenities: There is a caravan park, toilets, cafe, pub, and even a visitor center at Reculver.

What Can be Found There:

Seashells: Lots of well preserved seashells to be found at reculver. Dog whelks, flat winkles, mussels, oysters, whelk, netted dog whelk, large oyster shells, cockles, limpets, and all the usual suspects.

I found a lovely wenteltrap shell at Reculver, some very nicely  marked carpet clams, and also a tiny yellow shell that I have not been able to identify yet. A good beach for finding some pretty shells.

Driftwood: Bits and pieces of driftwood, but nothing like the amount at Westgate-on-Sea. Large planks and beams of wood scattered on the beach.

Fossils: Lots of fossils can be found here, mainly at low tide. Look for sharks teeth, vertibrae, fossil crabs, and bi-valves.

Minerals: Quite a few interesting mineral pebbles, the usual sugar quartz and quartz pebbles, but some very beautiful examples.

Sea Glass: I got so caught up looking for Wentletrap shells that I forgot to hunt for seaglass :0 I have no idea, lol. I will fill out this part when I go back to reculver next.

Interesting bits: You could find anything on the mud at Reculver, anything, from a gold shield to a dog turd! The area has a lot of history and relics are often found. I found this tile at Reculver as a child, and it's one of my best finds on a beach.

Conclusion:

Reculver beach is a great place to go beach combing for shells, relics, go rockpooling, take interesting photographs at, and soak up some history.

Photos I took of the groynes at Reculver...
